At its heart, Crusade is about progression. When you start a campaign, you create anOrder of Battle, which is a roster of your starting units. As you play games against your friends, the units that survive and achieve victory earnExperience Points (XP).
Once a unit banks enough XP, they rank up from their starting rank of Battle-ready. Ranking up allows you to award that unit a Battle Honour — a lasting upgrade such as a weapon modification or a specialized trait that makes them more effective on the battlefield. Conversely, units destroyed in battle can fail their Out of Action test and receive aBattle Scar, representing a permanent wound or combat fatigue.
How Crusade differs from matched play
Matched play is designed for balanced, competitive tournament environments. Every battle is a self-contained event with equal army sizes (points totals), and when the game is over, the slate is wiped clean. In contrast, Crusade prioritizes storytelling and persistence:
- Persistent growth: Units carry their upgrades, experience, and battle damage from game to game.
- Roster management: You muster your army for each battle from your Order of Battle, selecting which units to deploy based on the mission.
- Narrative focus: Campaigns are often divided into stages or chapters, with unique narrative rewards, custom missions, and campaign-wide rules.
- Asymmetrical battles: Crusade features a Crusade Blessing mechanic. If one player fields a heavily upgraded veteran army against a fresher recruit force, the player with the newer army receives free command points or narrative perks during the match to balance the playing field.
A story of your own making
In matched play, a Space Marine Captain is just a statline with a sword. In Crusade, he is Captain Malphas, survivor of the Siege of Hive Primus, who bears a master-crafted bolter and walks with a limp due to a Battle Scar earned against a Tyranid Carnifex. That narrative connection is what makes Crusade campaigns so compelling.
Why groups love Crusade campaigns
Narrative campaign play builds communities. Instead of focusing solely on winning or losing, Crusade players celebrate heroic moments: a lone squad of Guardsmen holding a objective against impossible odds, or a fledgling hero claiming their first duel victory.
