FAQ & Troubleshooting

Things that go wrong, and how to fix them. If your problem is not here, the Discord is the fastest way to get an answer.

General & Account Questions

Is Echelon free to use?

Yes. You can join unlimited campaigns as a player on any tier, and free tier hosts can run 1 active campaign for up to 4 players. See the Subscriptions & Tiers Guide for details.

How do I change the accent colour, or add custom banners?

The accent colour is free on every tier. Open Settings > Appearance from your profile menu and click a colour. It applies straight away, with nothing to save.

Custom banners and images need a Supporter or Commander subscription. Once subscribed you can upload a profile avatar, and campaign and roster banners from the edit screen of the campaign or roster itself.

How do I change my avatar?

Pick an icon or your army's logo, in colours you choose, on any plan. Only a photo of your own needs a subscription.

  1. Open Profile from your profile menu, and click the round avatar at the top of My Profile.
  2. In Edit Avatar, on the Icon tab, choose a Background colour and an Icon colour first.
  3. Click an icon under Icons, or a faction's logo under Factions. Every choice is drawn in your colours, and clicking one saves it and closes the dialog. There is no save button, so changing a colour and pressing Close changes nothing.

If the icon colour is hard to see on the background, a line under the colours says so and suggests one that reads better. It is advice: you can still save the pair.

On Supporter or Commander, the Photo tab uploads a picture instead. Your avatar is whichever you saved last, so picking an icon or a logo replaces a photo. It shows wherever you do: the sidebar, your campaigns' player lists and standings, and the battle cards.

I signed in on someone else's computer. How do I sign it out?

From any device you are still signed in on, go to Settings > Signed-in Devices and press Sign out of other devices. Every other device has to sign in again the next time it is used. The one you pressed it on stays signed in.

Sign out in your profile menu ends only the device you press it on. Your other devices stay signed in, so signing out on your phone does not interrupt a battle you have open on your laptop.

Some account changes sign out more than one device:

  • Setting a new password under Change password on your profile signs out every other device and keeps this one.
  • Resetting a forgotten password with Forgot password? on the sign-in page signs out every device, the one you reset it on included.
  • Deleting your account signs out every device.

Is Echelon made with AI?

Partly, and I would rather say so than have you find out. The code and most of the words started with an AI assistant, and the unit photos in the showcase are generated, because those armies are not mine to photograph.

Nothing inside Echelon touches your campaign. No AI reads it, and it never generates images for your Crusade Cards. There is a longer note about all of this at the bottom of the About page.

Roster & Order of Battle FAQ

How do I import my army list?

Export it from your list builder as .json, .ros or .rosz. Then open Roster in Echelon, click Add Unit, choose Import an army list, and upload the file. .ros and .rosz come from BattleScribe, NewRecruit and several other builders, so most exports work without a conversion step. See the Importing Armies Guide.

Do I have to type in my stratagems and Enhancements?

Not in an 11th Edition campaign. Pick your detachments and their rules, stratagems and Enhancements are filled in for you, free on every tier, marked Official. Writing your own on top of those, changing your army rules or a detachment's rules, or adding a homebrew detachment needs a Supporter or Commander subscription. Going back to the official rules is free. A 10th Edition force has no official set, so writing them stays free there. Your faction's own Agendas, requisitions, Battle Traits and Crusade Relics come from its codex the same way, in either edition, and writing your own of those is a Supporter feature where your faction has its own. If an official one disagrees with your codex, report it in the Discord. See Detachment Rules.

What happens if my army points exceed my Supply Limit?

The supply bar on your force banner turns red, and you cannot mark yourself ready until you are back under the limit. Nothing stops you from playing a battle. To get back under it, remove units or spend 1 RP on Increase Supply Limit.

Can I delete a unit without losing its battle history?

Partly. There is no archive: Remove Unit deletes the Crusade Card, with its XP, tallies, Battle Honours, Battle Scars and photos. Its unit history is kept, and what it did in each battle stays in your Battle Log, under the name it had. If the unit might come back into your story, leave it on your Order of Battle. A unit recorded as Destroyed in its Out of Action test stays on the list and stops counting towards your Supply Limit.

Campaign Administration FAQ

How do I invite players to my campaign?

As Campaign Host, open the Players tab of your campaign and click Invite players, the person with a plus sign at the top right of the list. The Share a link tab gives you a link to copy and send however you like, or post straight to WhatsApp, X, Reddit or Facebook. The Send an invite tab invites someone by name, username or email address, whether or not they have an Echelon account yet.

There is no join code. A player you have sent a link to either follows it, or opens Join a Crusade in the sidebar and pastes it into Invite link or token. See the Host Quickstart Guide.

What happens when my campaign reaches the player limit?

The limit depends on the host's tier: 4 players on Free, 8 on Supporter, 50 on Commander. Additional players trying to join are told the campaign is full for the host's current tier. Upgrading the host's account unlocks the extra slots immediately, without interrupting active games.

Can a Host correct a player's logged match score?

Not the score. Victory points can only be edited while the battle is still in progress, and each player files one post-battle report that cannot be filed again, so a finished battle keeps the result it was given.

Two things can still be put right:

  • The host can change a battle's name, mission, date, location, stage and narrative, with Edit battle on the battle page, until the battle is completed.
  • A player can correct their own unit's experience, battle tallies and Battle Scars on its Crusade Card, from their Order of Battle.

Why can I not see the reward on a Mission I have been given?

The host chose to keep it secret until it is earned. You will see that a reward exists, and the text once the host marks you as having passed. The reward is not sent to your browser before then, so there is nothing to find by looking for it.

Why can I not mark my own Mission complete?

Only the Campaign Host judges a Mission, which is what lets a hidden reward stay hidden from the player earning it. Agendas are the opposite: you pick those and you report them yourself.

Why can I not add a Mission to a battle that has finished?

A Completed, Cancelled or Archived battle is settled, and so are its Missions. Write them before the game. Missions scoped to a stage or to the whole campaign carry across every battle in range, which is usually what you want if you are adding one late.

Technical Troubleshooting

My import failed with a parsing error

  • Ensure you exported .json, .ros or .rosz rather than PDF, HTML or text.
  • Verify your .json file is uncompressed and not corrupted.

The Live Battle Companion lost internet connection during a match

Echelon does not keep battle state on your device. Scores and kills save to the server as you enter them, so while the connection is down they may not be saved. The page keeps showing what it last loaded. Keep that stretch of the game on paper, and once you are back online check each round against it: the arrows beside the round number take you back to earlier rounds.
